The Challenge

Superbet's cloud costs were growing faster than revenue as the platform scaled 20-30 times in just a few years. The company prioritized speed over cost efficiency during rapid growth, leading to inefficient lift-and-shift migrations. Fluctuating demand from betting spikes required keeping 25% of workloads uncommitted, limiting access to commitment-based AWS discounts like Reserved Instances and Savings Plans.

The Solution

DoiT implemented Flexsave for Compute to automatically optimize the uncommitted 25% of workloads while maintaining flexibility. Cloud Reliability Engineers helped identify and remove inefficiencies like unused discs and unnecessary CloudTrail accounts. Meet Superbet

Superbet is a tech and entertainment company founded in 2008, with the mission of bringing exciting, technology-powered entertainment in sports and gaming to millions of customers around the world. The group has operations or tech hubs in 10 countries, with the most important markets being Romania, Belgium and Poland. Blackstone made a strategic minority investment of 175 million euros in the company in 2019. Online sports betting is typically a transactional affair, but Superbet launched its platform six years ago with a different vision. Broadening the ecosystem to include chat rooms, user following, extensive stats and results, Superbet turned sports betting into an entertainment experience where users come to socialize, exchange tips, and enjoy themselves.

Automated Savings with Flexsave for Compute

DoiT recommended Flexsave for Compute to generate automated savings while maintaining flexibility for the uncommitted 25% of AWS EC2 workloads. Flexsave for Compute optimizes instances not covered by commitments and auto-applies discounted rates. This allows Superbet to remain flexible with cloud usage while ensuring the best available price for compute instances, all without spending time manually searching for discounts. The solution immediately takes care of new machine provisioning and reduces compute resource costs going forward.

Building More Efficient Cloud Architecture

Superbet and DoiT began optimizing cloud usage by removing inefficiencies from rapid growth. A key challenge was lack of visibility into which infrastructure aspects were costing more than necessary. DoiT helped Superbet understand common cloud billing mistakes, such as incurring costs from enabling services and forgetting about them. Cloud Reliability Engineers helped identify unnecessary services like unused discs and unneeded AWS CloudTrail accounts, reducing overall cloud expenditure. DoiT CREs now help Superbet make architectural decisions around containers, databases, and other infrastructure choices.

Understanding Cloud Costs with DoiT Console

A key part of Superbet's FinOps journey centered on using DoiT Cloud Analytics for clear, granular visibility of cloud costs. With Cloud Analytics, Superbet can spot and understand rising costs as they emerge, rather than reviewing them after the fact. This helps quickly identify savings and take action. With Allocations, Superbet can allocate cloud costs to relevant departments and projects to understand spending patterns and identify trends to keep costs under control. Results and Future Partnership

Since adopting Flexsave for Compute, Superbet now covers 92% of workloads with commitments, up from 75%. The company has saved around $200,000, achieving 21% all-time effective savings rate and 6% reduction in total cloud bill.
